Position Summary Information

Position Description:

Assist the Lead Heating Plant Operator in the NDSU Heating Plant with the operation of boilers burning natural gas, coal and/or fuel oil; assist in the operation of fuel systems, feed water, control systems, pumping and expansion tank systems; check and record various in-plant meters and assist in the collection of various operating and maintenance records; assist in the operation of various chemical feed systems, including making various chemical tests; perform or assist in repairs, preventative maintenance, daily maintenance and cleaning of the plant, and other duties as assigned. Operate ash system & soot blowers to remove ashes from coal boilers. Operate coal handling equipment for unloading rail cars to fill coal bunkers & storage bin.
Work schedule will be rotating shifts and position is subject to call-back 24/7.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to operate coal handling equipment, ash system and pay loader
  • Must have a Class D drivers license
    *Must have a Class B commercial drivers license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to perform physical duties assigned to include: walking, standing, stooping, lifting of heavy objects up to 100 lbs; reaching, bending, pushing or pulling, carrying up to 100 lbs; working conditions & surroundings which includes working inside/outside, hot/cold temperatures, noise, dust.
  • Ability to work with both direct supervision and independently after instruction.
  • Ability to perform all manual tasks related to steam production; clean, repair and maintain boilers, associated equipment and surrounding areas.
  • Must have a mechanical aptitude and the ability to learn the operation of a high pressure coal, gas and oil fired boilers and auxiliary systems.
  • Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical and /or mechanical training
  • One year experience in a heating plant operation
  • Engineer License 2nd Class B
  • Computer knowledge and experience
Physical Demands:

Walking, standing, stooping, lifting of heavy objects up to 100 lbs, reaching, bending, pushing or pulling, carrying up to 100 lbs; working conditions & surrounding which includes working inside/outside, hot/cold temperatures, noise, dust
